#EndSARS: AU issues official statement, condemns shooting of protesters

 The African Union Commission has issued an official statement on the shooting of peaceful protesters which occurred in the Lekki area of Lagos State and in some other States in Nigeria. 



In the statement, Chairperson of AU, Moussa Faki Mahamat, condemned the violence that erupted during the peaceful #EndSARS protests in the Lekki area of Lagos State on Tuesday night, leading to the shooting of some of the protesters. 


The statement which was signed and issued by Ebba Kalondo (Ms), Spokesperson to the Chairperson of the African Union Commission reveals that the Chairperson condoled with the families of those who were killed during the attack and wished those injured a speedy recovery.


“The Chairperson appeals to all political and social actors to reject the use of violence and respect human rights and the rule of law,” the statement added.


Mahamai called on all parties to privilege dialogue in order to de-escalate the situation and find concrete and durable reforms.


Recall that the crisis escalated after men of the Nigerian military allegedly opened fire on the protesters which resulted in multiple deaths and injuries.


Meanwhile, the Lagos State government has said no fatality was recorded during the incident, leaving questions on the lips of Nigerians.
