COVID-19: Ogun State Govt Gives Update On Reopening Worship Centers

Ogun State Government has disclosed that all worship Centers remained closed.

The state government while reacting to the query from the Christian Association of Nigeria asking why churches are still locked while Markets are open said CAN should not compare markets with churches.

This was contained in a statement signed by the Special Adviser to Governor Dapo Abiodun on Public Communications, Remmy Hazzan.

On Wednesday, Pastor Adebayo Oladeji, the Special Assistant (Media and Communications) to the President, Rev Supo Ayokunle on behalf of the association declared the continued closure of churches particularly in Lagos and Ogun states, unjustifiable.

The statement in parts

“With the reopening of the economy, especially the markets, both organised and the unorganised markets, along with the plan to reopen airports and schools, the closure of churches anywhere in the country is no longer tenable and acceptable. In what way are the opened and roadside markets more organised than the church, which warranted their opening?” 

The government however replied that, comparing markets with churches and mosques is not ideal because the market environment is an open space and so the use of face masks may just be sufficient.

The statement added that the government is not taking any unjustified decision, as every decision is in the interest of the public, adding that Lagos is the epicentre and Ogun State is very close.

It further added that everyone will be back to worship God, stressing that the public interest is not meant to punish any faith-based organisation or any faith whatsoever.
