IWD:Check out Organisations Empowering Women in Tech in Africa and Nigeria

d

According to the United Nations, digital technologies have advanced more rapidly than any innovation in our history – reaching around 50 percent of the developing world’s population in only two decades and transforming societies.

It's no longer news that the field of technology is rapidly evolving, and it's important to have diverse perspectives and experiences to drive innovation and progress. Meanwhile, women are still underrepresented in the tech industry, both in Nigeria and globally.

Big thanks to organisations and initiatives emerging to address this disparity and empower young women to pursue careers in tech.

One such organization is She Code Africa, founded by Ada Nduka Oyom. She Code Africa is a non-profit organization that provides training, mentorship, and career opportunities for young African women interested in tech. The program aims to bridge the gender gap in tech by empowering and inspiring young women to become technology leaders. The program also connects young women with mentors in the industry, providing guidance and support as they navigate their careers.

Another initiative making strides in this area is TechHerNG, a non-profit organization that r to empower women and girls in Nigeria by providing them with the skills and tools they need to thrive in the digital age. TechHerNG organizes workshops, seminars, and hackathons to engage and empower young women in tech. They also run a mentorship program that pairs young women with experienced mentors in the industry.

African Women in Technology (AWIT) is a non-profit organization that aims to empower and support women in technology across Africa. They provide resources, mentorship, and networking opportunities for women in tech.

Women Who Tech is a global organization that brings together women in technology to provide networking opportunities, mentorship, and funding for women-led startups.

She Leads Africa is a social enterprise that provides training, resources, and funding opportunities for women entrepreneurs in Africa, including those in the tech industry.

Women Techmakers is a program from Google that provides resources and support for women in technology, including scholarships, networking events, and leadership training.

Women in Tech Africa is a community of women in technology across Africa that provides mentorship, training, and networking opportunities for women in tech.

One of the key challenges in getting more women into tech is overcoming the societal barriers that often discourage girls from pursuing careers in STEM fields. Women are often stereotyped as being less capable in technical fields, and this can discourage young women from pursuing careers in tech. These Organisations are working to change this by providing mentorship, support, and opportunities for young women to excel in tech.

In conclusion, the underrepresentation of women in the tech industry is a challenge that needs to be addressed. However, by providing mentorship, support, and opportunities for young women to excel in tech, we can create a more diverse and inclusive industry that reflects the world we live in and serves the needs of everyone.
