Dealing with Inconsistency and Procrastination

d

We’ve all been there. We make a plan to achieve a goal, and we start strong, but then we lose steam, become inconsistent, and procrastinate. We tell ourselves we’ll get back on track tomorrow, but tomorrow becomes next week, and next week becomes next month.

We begin to doubt our ability to achieve the goal and question if it's even worth pursuing.

Inconsistency and procrastination are common challenges that most people face when trying to achieve a goal. Whether it’s keeping fit, writing or reading a book, or starting a business, the road to success is paved with obstacles, no doubt but with the right mindset and strategies, you can overcome these challenges and achieve your goals.

In this post, we will explore some strategies for dealing with inconsistency and procrastination.

First, understand the root cause of inconsistency and procrastination.

Inconsistency and procrastination often stem from fear, laziness, uncertainty, and lack of clarity. Fear of failure or success, uncertainty about the steps to take, and lack of clarity about the desired outcome can all lead to inconsistency and procrastination.

To overcome these challenges, you need to understand their root cause.

Ask yourself:

What am I afraid of?

What is causing me to procrastinate?

What do I need clarity on?

Once you identify the root cause, you can start to develop strategies to address it.

Let's start by breaking down the goal into smaller, manageable tasks.

One of the main reasons people become inconsistent and procrastinate is that the goal feels overwhelming, breaking the goal down into smaller, manageable tasks can help make it feel more achievable. Instead of focusing on the end goal, focus on the next small step you can take, always celebrate each small win, and use it as motivation to keep going.

Develop a routine and stick to it.

Inconsistency often stems from a lack of routine. If you don’t have a clear plan for when and how you will work towards your goal, it's easy to fall into the trap of procrastination. You can start with your daily routine such as keeping your bed arranged before stepping out every morning, doing the dishes and even ensuring a touch-up on your face and so many others.

It is usually great to start with something simple and stick to it for months and this will subtly become a culture for you, this will make other complex ones easy and achievable. Set specific times for working towards your goal, and make it a non-negotiable part of your day.

Eliminate distractions

Distractions can derail even the most focused person. To combat procrastination, eliminate as many distractions as possible. Turn off your data, and find a quiet place to work. If you find social media a significant distraction, consider using an app that blocks it during your work hours. if it requires you to change your environment then, do it.

Hold yourself accountable.

Accountability is a powerful tool for overcoming inconsistency and procrastination.

Find someone who can hold you accountable for your progress toward your goal. This can be a friend, family member, or even a coach. Share your goal with them and permit them to hold you accountable. Knowing that someone is watching your progress can be a powerful motivation.

Practice self-compassion.

Please, remember to practice self-compassion. We all have days where we don’t feel motivated, and that’s okay instead of beating yourself up over it, acknowledge how you’re feeling and be kind to yourself. Remember that progress, not perfection, is the goal.

Inconsistency and procrastination are common challenges that can derail even the most motivated person. However, with the right mindset and strategies, you can overcome these challenges and achieve your goals with persistence and determination, you can achieve whatever you set your mind to do.
